stupid question of the month

"There's no iron in stainless steel, is there?"

I'm sure that many of you reading this won't think that is a stupid question, but the person who asked it is an engineer.

That's right up there with, "are there hydrocarbons in oil?"

Aw...poor guy. Show me an engineer who knows everything he's supposed to know, and I'll show you someone who isn't human.

Steel is made of the elements Iron and Carbon. Stainless steel has more carbon.

Petroleum products are not made of hydrocarbons, they are hydrocarbons.

This is mineral X, which apparently has no name.  Somehow, it becomes steel.  Stainless, as it were.  Any questions?

Yes, is all of being an engineer this easy?

Will this be on the test?

Test?  No, you just get a paper that says you're an engineer at some point.  We're only talking at the front of the room because we have to provide some reason for you to pay us.

Once when I was in high school concert choir, the director was barking at the sopranos for singing sharp all day. One of the ditzier girls in the group piped up and said, with complete seriousness, "Well, if the sopranos sing sharp, and the altos sing flat, don't they cancel each other out?".

That was pretty much the end of productive rehearsal time that day.
