I made a web page with pictures of my niece. Just pictures, but I have her name (first name only) as the page address. Do you think this might be a problem? They say not to put children's names on the internet, but since there is no last name anywhere, could this possibly be a problem?

You could argue, "better safe than sorry," but is there really any danger at all?

Just keep it as private as you can. Give only friends & relatives the URL. In fact, thanks for reminding me, I should make sure my LJ pics of The Kid at least be Friends Only. Even that isn't enough for some people, who would keep them Private or not post them at all, to avoid those pics being posted elsewhere on the Net.

That's what i'd like to do, but she's not my daughter.

What do you mean? Her parents want it to be more public?

Actually I mean that what I want is irrelevant because if her mother doesn't want her name on it, her name doesn't go on it. But yeah, it would be much easier if she didn't have to be careful of who she gives it to.

Lots of things would be much easier if we didn't have to be vigilent to sordid actions by the lowest common denominator.

For example, I'd really really like to know that I could take a walk by myself in the dark, but I had to let go of that idea decades ago. Even though I live in one of the safest communities in the country, I'd still be foolish to walk alone in the dark. And I can't just post pics of my daughter for my friends to see. *sigh*

I guess I'd need to hear dozens of examples of things happening to kids to feel paranoid about sharing pics of my kids with people. As of now, I haven't heard of any. Maybe I'm just horribly naive.

I'd only need to hear one or two - and I haven't yet.

I've heard a story or two about how kids get into trouble surfing the net, but it hasn't made me stop my kids from doing it. I've heard stories of stolen identities, but I continue to buy things online with my credit card. I guess what I'm saying is that I refuse to live in fear and paranoia. I'm cautious and careful, but I don't go overboard. That said, if I were your sister, I'd want you to be careful with my kid's pictures. I wouldn't care if you used her first name, but I'd care if you gave more info than that.
