Today somebody said
I get tired of hearing the same old protest songs and chants. It's like they never grew up out of the 60s, and hold that decade as some sort of cherished era, when in reality, it was and remains to this day -- a failed attempt for some kind of idealistic life by breaking rules and turning inward instead of outward. Basically a selfish "me" mode of being saying "I can do anything that feels good or makes ME feel happy."

It's funny. Wasn't the '70's the "me" decade? No wait, wasn't it the eighties? Yeah, that was it. The decade of a failed attempt at a hedonistic life by making new rules and turning inward instead of outward. Basically, a selfish "me" mode of being, saying, "I can do anything that feels good or makes ME feel happy." <cynical>At least in the sixties they tried to get everyone to join in the love. In the eighties it was every man for himself.</cynical>

Why don't people get it? It's not an isolated incident. It's not about them. It's not any different now. You are doing the same thing they used to do, and it's no better or worse now than it ever was. You all want the same things.

You're absolutely right about the ME decade being the 80's. The 60's were much more about people feeling empowered to make meaningful change in the world. From hippies to political protesters to militant blacks, it was a time of great social/political/personal experimentation, which, for the most part, was far more outward than inward in nature.

The source of your quote might benefit from reading up on the 60's.

I liked the 60's...it was real..
I think the 70's was plastic people and the 80's was the *me* generation... and the record keeps skipping.
people have no regard for others anymore...it is sad really.

makes me wanna play country joe and the fish...;)

I think the 60's couldn't have been any worse than the self-involved bitching I keep seeing from my peers. (I was born in '71) I get so sick of hearing the same 'cynical stuff and psuedo world-weary posing from people...at least in the 60's it sounded like people were trying to care about each other and help each other...:(
