This weekend was pretty good.

The weather was great. While it is late enough in the year to get cold quickly once the sun goes out of sight, the days were beautiful. Seventy and sunny. It froze on Friday night, though.

Our scout troop went to a Civil War reenactment. We got to tour the camps and watch a battle. I enjoyed watching the artillery fire. Ever seen a smoke ring from a cannon? They had a brass band, that used Civil War era instruments that I had never seen before. They had surgeons. I was approached to be a victim for one of the demonstrations, but I had to leave before that. You should have seen the baskets full of (plastic) amputated limbs.

The battle they did was the Battle of South Mountain. We spoke with one of the Confederate soldiers. He said his company went into battle with 100 men, but came home with twelve.

I was struck by the lack of dying soldiers in the reenactment. Nobody wants to die early in the battle, because then you have to lay there for so long, while everyone else is still running around shooting. Near the end, the Rebel soldiers started dying en masse. Until everyone started running out of ammunition. Fortunately, the battle was ended by a retreat, rather than hand-to-hand bayonet combat.

On Sunday, Cyn came up to my place and she hung around while I cleaned up the place. Sounds fun, huh? Well we did drive over to the old cemetary in Cedarburg. I finished up a roll of film and we relaxed in the sun.

In the evening, after Cyn left, I suddenly realized I had a sore throat. I took out the garbage, checked e-mail and went to bed early. By that time, my head hurt too. I'm not doing so well today.
