women in Afghanistan

Since a woman cannot go out in public with out a member of her family as an escort, what happens if all the males in her family suddenly die? Is the man dishonored before his god in death for leaving his women behind, or is the woman just stoned?

The only role a living woman has in Afghanistan is to serve her family's needs; anything beyond this simple endeavour is punishable. (after all, a woman out of her house must be doing something with the outside world - this is automatically assumed to be adultery or other such unholy practices.)

Widows are twice burdened in that they must become beggars, else starve - they cannot remarry. Even in such desperate circumstance, women must excercise extreme caution - a woman who removes any part of her burka* to eat what is given to her will be beaten on sight by members of the ministry of vice and virtue; the taleban version of nazi germany's gestapo. Such beatings are frequently fatal. Who's going to argue with Allah's will?

More often than not, beggars of either gender are stoned, kicked or simply spat upon. It is taught that anyone to come into such misfortune has done something to deserve it.

It doesn't really make sense, but that's what happens when you restrict peoples' freedoms to the point of absurdity.

* Burkas are the cloaks and veils worn to conceal a woman's appearance, to inhibit lust, vanity, and to preserve her chastity. Men are forced to keep their beards untrimmed for the same reason.

Did you see the recent news story that showed executions in the soccer field (built with donated aid funds from the UN or someone...) of women? They were made to kneel then shot in the head from behind. A large crowd apparently shows up every week to watch hanging and executions.

The women are not allow to beg publicly, or they can be executed. And they had video of women begging from them. (This was all hidden camera footage.)

When the Taliban spokesperson was interviewed and asked why they execute in a soccer field, he said that if the outsiders had a problem with it, they should send them money to build a place for executions. No shit.

I don't know what the woman would do, but she might move in with relatives like a sister, her parents, her friends, who knows.

They also had video of some women teaching young girls how to read and write. They said they knew they could be killed for it, but that it was wrong not to teach them. Now there's brave women.
