Cyn and I went to the zoo yesterday.
As much as I love the animals, I was a bit disappointed. Much of the zoo hadn't changed in the decade or two since I had been there last. But some of it was fairly new, and nice. Monkey island was empty, and that was always the big attraction. I took a whole roll of film, and I'll be surprised if more than three pictures turned out. I'd line up a shot, and just when I was ready to click, the animal moved. Every damn time. Sometimes leaving a blur on film, sometimes leaving me with nothing to shoot.
What struck me the most was that the animals all looked so bored. All but the fish, really.
The jelly fish were really cool. The polar bear is usually another highlight, but he didn't do anything while we were there. We were hoping he'd be in the water. (They have windows below the water where you can see him swim.) The grizzly bears were active.
Scott, I said hi to the hippos for you. If you ever make it up here, I'd love to take you there.

Date: 2001-09-17 02:16 am (UTC)From:Then I went on a field trip to the LA Zoo...OMG!
talk about OLD and dilapidated!
The animals were so sad....
I believe in trying to save the species by removing them from an endangered environment, but to stick them in a crappy pen for display sickens me.
You would think with all the money in LA, the OVER paid actors would pay for an updated zoo.
Sad really....very very sad.
hope you had a blast anyway...Ü

Date: 2001-09-17 07:58 am (UTC)From:The most amazing animal thing I ever saw on tv was elephants swimming, filmed from below. I didn't even know they could swim. They were being taken out to an island off India to do some kind of work, with the mahouts sitting on them as they swam.
