We went to Racine to have dinner with Heather and Greg. Three of us have birthdays in May, so it was a Birthday dinner. And you might count our anniversary and Mother's Day. We did the quintessential Wisconsin dinner experience - a supper club. And not just any supper club, but the famous HobNob. It's a fancy place, with a bar overlooking Lake Michigan. Plush leather booths, chandeliers and candelabras, mirrors and swanky wallpaper, etc. While they've kept it up well, the style is vintage. You expect to see the Rat Pack, or maybe a gangster. There are a lot of rooms, including ones we didn't see. Oh, and don't forget the great vintage neon signs out front, and the martini painted on the front of the building.

What is a supper club? It's hard to define, but you know when you're there. It's kind of a destination dinner with friends or family. You hang out at the bar. Then they take you to your table. You can have as much food as you can handle. Hearty midwestern fare. Then maybe more drinks. You can stay all night if you want. We started with the quintessential drink, brandy old fashioned, sweet. I had the quintessential supper club meat, prime rib. The other would be the Friday fish fry, but you can get that pretty much anywhere.
The dress code at the Hobnob is a bit on the formal side. Aside from the high class decor, the clientele is older, and then men all wear sport jackets. There was a pianist in our dining room.
So I stuffed myself. It was dessert that put me over the top. But I didn't have to eat breakfast the next day, so I guess it evens out. Cindy and I cooked a nice brunch for our anniversary. French toast, bacon, fruit and Mimosas. After that, I didn't need a big supper.
