I've been busy with stuff around the house. Cleaning, vacuuming, splitting wood, building fires in the fireplace, getting our taxes together, keeping the birds fed, getting a little exercise.
I'm enjoying splitting wood. I've got a Fiskars splitting axe. It's great. It makes me want to keep splitting. No, I can't explain. The fires are nice, too. The family room usually gets up to 78°, but today it was 82°! I think the temp actually varies widely at different parts of the room.
I was worried it would be difficult to keep the rest of the house warm, since it was so cold outside. It was below zero last night, and got up to about 12° for a little bit this afternoon. For most of the day the rest of the house stayed reasonably warm, which was nice, but it got really cold late, when we were watching a movie in the family room. It's back down to 2° now, but the temp will soon start rising, and get up to 20 tomorrow. Anyway, it's been interesting learning how best to use the fireplace. I had tried running the central air fan, to keep the warm air circulating, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference. I put a fan on the floor blowing air out of the family room into the hallway in the back of the house (bedrooms), or vice versa. I think that helps keep the back of the house a little warmer.
We went out for dinner on Friday night, forgetting it was fish fry season. Had to wait over half an hour for a table. Then went to see Willy Porter play a show. Nice evening, despite the cold.
The back is fine. Sometimes it feels a little... almost strained after working it. I think that's just because I'm out of shape.
