The weekend before last, we went to a funeral. It was for the boyfriend of my stepsister's daughter. Paige is 20, Tom had just turned 24. They had been together for four years, which is a long time for someone that young. I had only met him once or twice, but the two were pretty serious.
He died on Tuesday morning. At the funeral on Saturday, Paige looked pretty bad. It was all she could do to hold it together at any given moment. We were only at the visitation for a little while, but she broke out sobbing more than once. Which put her mother and grandmother in tears.
Paige left his home in the evening, and he said he was going to his storage locker. Paige was at work the next day when the police showed up to ask her some questions. At the end of the questioning, they told her that he was dead. She freaked out and went home, where her mother and grandmother joined her. The next day she got a call from a friend, who told her what happened. Tom was at a party and had done heroin. They found him unresponsive the next morning. Text messages went around as everyone tried to figure out what to do. WTF? Finally, this guy called 911 and went over there. Tom died on the way to the hospital.
Paige says she'd never known him to do heroin. It's suddenly become very cheap and available. Last I heard, the person who supplied it was in jail.
