leaving Islay
Feb. 7th, 2014 11:16 pmAfter we left Kilchoman Churchyard...

...we drove back around Loch Indaal to Bowmore for dinner.

Then back to the B&B. Earlier in the day, someone had told us that a gale was coming in overnight. We checked at the ferry, and they told us departure was moved from Port Ellen, on the south side, to Port Askaig on the east side of the island. The south side of the island is more exposed to the ocean. On the east side of the island, the Sound of Islay is a channel that runs north to south, so the ferry would remain in more sheltered water for longer, even though the journey is longer.
So anyway, Port Ellen...

Near Port Askaig, we took a quick jaunt to Bunnahabhin distillery. We didn't really have any interest in going there, since they get really low marks in hospitality - all their reviews are bad - but we saw all the other distilleries, so we thought we ought to be able to say we saw them too. It was a rough ride over, due to the storm and the nearrow, one-lane, winding, hilly road. And the fact that my dad was driving dangerously fast, considering the blind curves (he was in a hurry, not to miss the ferry). We had some words about that. Fortunately, there was no traffic.

So we pulled in, took a couple of photos, and left. Went on to Port Askaig, and caught the ferry in good time. It was a bit of a rough ride.
