long weekend
Sep. 26th, 2012 12:27 amSaturday, I was up early, for Doors Open Milwaukee. I went down to Milwaukee to see and tour some (mostly historic) buildings. I met a guy from the Flickr photo group. We toured the MGIC building. I was always curious about it. It's a four story building, where each story is larger than the one below it. Its furnishings and art are very modern. Modern for the late 1960's anyway. Then we went up to the lower east side, and saw several churches. Grace Lutheran, All Saints Cathedral, Summerfield Church, St. Paul's. Lunch at County Clare. Then down to Immanuel Presbyterian, which was closed. Then we took the long way to the Pfister Hotel, where there was nothing to see if you weren't on the tour, which we didn't have time for. Past the Railway Exchange building, which was closed. Over to the Pabst, which was closed (after dropping in at the Newsroom Pub), then the Performing Arts Center, which was closed. Then we got to City Hall a few minutes early, for the 3:00 bell tower tour. We had to wait an extra 45 minutes, due to some screw-up with the tour guide. By the time we got out of there, Mark had to leave, and I had to run down to the Iron Block Building for the 4:30 tour. I had to wait an extra fifty minutes for this half hour tour. I had to leave, 25 minutes into it, and didn't see the best part of the tour, which sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the outside of the building. The cast-iron facade is being repaired and restored. >:-( So the morning was good, but the afternoon was pretty much a bust, with the exception of the bell tower tour.
I then ran off to meet Cindy, Heather and Greg for dinner at Maharaja. It was a long and tiring day.
Sunday morning, I packed, and we left for Minneapolis. We met Michelle and Matt and went to dinner. It was good to see them again, and chat and catch up. They took us to
The Craftsman. Mpls has such good food! Then we checked in at the hotel, and had a drink. My friend Phil was the bartender, so the drinks were free!
Monday, we went downtown for a look around. We started with a walk on Nicolette Island. Then we drove down to the southern end of the Mill District, and walked up a ways. We went on the old Stone Arch Bridge. On the way back we stopped at a Thai restaurant. After we drove into downtown where the big buildings are, and looked around. We walked for a while.
Then we went south to Phil's house, where we hung out with him and his kids for a while. Then the three of us went back downtown where we had supper at Keiran's Irish Pub, which is across the street from the Target Center, where we very shortly saw Rush. Woo!
This morning we left for home, and stopped to visit Cindy's mom, for a bit.
It was a long weekend, but we both have the rest of the week off.
