Scotch tasting last night
Aug. 15th, 2010 11:09 amA couple of months ago, I was talking with a friend who had just discovered how great Scotch whisky is. We thought we ought to get together some night with a couple of bottles, so he could try some more kinds. Mike said he knew some other guys who would probably enjoy that, so I said we should do a tasting. He called some friends, I called some friends, and we got some people together with some whisky. I talked with the guys to get an idea of what they liked, and recommended some particular malts that they should bring. This way we got a good variety styles.
Turns out that none of my friends could make it. Todd said he'd come, but ended up having to work. My dad originally couldn't make it, but his plans changed, and he came last night. At first, I thought he should run it. Then I was resigned to doing it myself. Then, by the time he said he could make it after all, I was a little disappointed that I didn't have the chance to show my stuff. Of course, with him running the show, it went a lot better, and was much more informative that I could have made it.
It was a good time. Some of the guys were amazed at how different the varieties are, and how they're all made with only the same three ingredients - barley, water and yeast. I was a little surprised that most of the guys really liked the Bowmore. That's an odd one, and very bold and peaty. Beforehand, Mike H had told me he wanted to bring something smooth. He liked the Bowmore so much that I told him he could take the rest of the Bowmore home with him.
My dad had a good time. He liked the enthusiasm of the new guys, and teaching them something. After the tasting itself, we went outside where most of the guys had cigars - my dad tried one. We hung out for a couple more hours, had some good cheese and some pasta, and watched the skies for Perseids.
