We finally got to a show this year. We're subscribers to the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. We get six shows a year. The season is September through June, so we're well into the second half of the season. Our first show was in early November, but we had to give the tickets away, since were were in Arizona at the time. We missed the second show. It was a few weeks ago, and we forgot about it. I thought the show was in early March, and by the time I checked the tickets, it had passed.
So it was kind of weird walking in and not knowing where our seats were. We used to always sit in the balcony. Last season, we sat down on the main floor. This season, our tickets were in the center loge ( the main upper level, in between the box seat level and the balcony). I couldn't even remember what floor that was. This was probably the third time ever that I'd sat in the loge.
This weekend and next, The symphony was having a Brahms festival. The place was packed. Gil Shahan was the soloist for the Violin Concerto. He played in an agressive appearing manner. He was called back out to the stage three times afterwards. The second piece was Brahms's Symphony No. 4. I liked this one a lot (even aside from the passage that any Yes fan would be familiar with).
It's interesting to watch what goes on with the orchestra members. The principal Bassist was still there, but he's no longer the principal. I wonder if he gave up the job. He's been with the orchestra since 1962. Topknot was back. Okay, we don't always know the names of the players, so we assign our own names. That's one of the cello players, who sometimes wears a distinctive ponytail. She was gone all last season. Another cello player has a new name - sunglasses boy. I saw something glint in the lights as he walked onstage. I thought maybe it was a yarmulke, but when he turned to sit down, I could see only hair on his head. Then I saw something shine red. It looked like sunglasses, pushed up on top of his head and forgotten. We were pretty far away, so I couldn't tell for sure what it was, but I can't imagine what else it might have been. A tiara? Headphones? Other than that, it was good to see the familiar faces on stage. Samantha, Tanya, Tallguy (the principal cellist looks about 6'-6"), Megumi, Laura, and all those bald guys. Cyn's boss's friend Dean wasn't in today - he plays timpani.
Next sunday is another show. More Brahms.
