darkness on the half of town
May. 31st, 2004 12:04 amI lost connection through my cable, so while I was rebooting I went to the kitchen for some toast. I happened to glance out the window and something looked strange. In the neighbor's front yard is a lighted sign, but beyond that it was all dark. I looked out the front door and there was more darkness. Windows and signs on my side of the street were lit up, but the other side of the street was dark. And everything beyond it. And everything I could see to the north. A couple of blocks south seemed to be fine. It looked like the entire east half of the town was dark.
If I hadn't been online at the time, I might never have known there was an outage. There weren't any storms.
My neighbor said his TV was out. He called support but they told him they wouldn't investigate until there were three calls. So I called too. I told the girl the power was out across the street, but she said she didn't know anything about that. She went through the motions of checking my modem and having me reboot. Then she said there was a problem at a station, and they had two guys out there for the previous hour. It would be back on by morning and they'd credit me a day's service.
An hour later the power came back on and so did the cable.
