A while back, the heating element went out, on our dishwasher. I called Sears to see about getting it fixed. They said they could sign me up for a dishwasher service plan. For a certain amount of money, they'd offer free service and repair for a year. They'd even send somebody out to clean it, if I so desired. The amount quoted (I don't remember how much) sounded likely to be less than the repair I needed, so I signed up. I did save money on the deal, and the amount seemed like a good price.
Some time later, they called and offered me a new deal. For an increase in my payment, they'd add my microwave to the deal. That tends to break down ever so often, so I took the deal.
Last week they called and offered me a new deal. For even more money, they'd add some other appliances. I was tempted to take it since our refrigerator is some years old, but I couldn't remember exactly how old, and it didn't seem likely that it would give out in the next 12 months. I declined.
On Sunday, Cyn noticed water creeping out from under the dishwasher. I called for service, and they told me my service plan had expired two weeks ago.
I thought it odd that they didn't give me an opportunity to renew the contract. But then I realized that the older an appliance is, the more expensive insurance would be. That's why they kept adding more appliances and charging more money. And they did this at the expiration of the contract every year. But when the salesperson called me, it would have been smart to state that my contract was expiring. It didn't occur to me that my current coverage was expiring. I don't think that would have swayed me, but it makes sense when you're trying to sell something.
