When you're with a group of people that may not know each other all that well, and you propose singing happy birthday to one of them, make sure start things off by naming the person. Like, "let's all sing happy birthday to Shuva!" That way you won't end up with a song that goes "happy birthday dear... *mumble*, happy birthday to you!"

But wouldn't the people at the party know the name of the person? Oops...I guess the birthday wasn't the reason for the party...

Right. She just happened to have a birthday around the time of the party. I should have remembered her name, having been introduced to her an hour earlier, but you know how that goes.

When the song started, I was trying to remember her name. Sandy? No, that was the other woman.. Sh.. Sh-something." And then when the song got to the part with her name, there was a pause, as the hosts (the next-door neighbors, who provided the cake) didn't even say her name for a moment!

Ha! That is when the song goes "happy birthday, happy birthday, happy birthday to you!"

Awk!

There could have been name tags?

But, yeah... that's sorta bad planning. Another option is to simply sing "happy Birthday" in the spot where the name should be:

"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy birthday to you!"
