When you're with a group of people that may not know each other all that well, and you propose singing happy birthday to one of them, make sure start things off by naming the person. Like, "let's all sing happy birthday to Shuva!" That way you won't end up with a song that goes "happy birthday dear... *mumble*, happy birthday to you!"

But, yeah... that's sorta bad planning. Another option is to simply sing "happy Birthday" in the spot where the name should be:
"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy Birthday! Happy Birthday! Happy birthday to you!"
