Is it wrong to be bothered by people pronouncing their own names wrong?

Duofours...

My college roommate's name was BARTELS.

Part of her family said BARdulls and the other ones said barTELLS. I thought that was funny then, but, after teacher-years of seeing names and the Amerianizations of them, it's not surprising to me that families adjust things.

LOL.. that's classic! I'd almost expect that of east coast vs. west coast, or yankee vs sutherner... :)

I went to school with a guy named Kroeger. He and his two brothers each pronounced it a different way. Kreeger, kroger, and krayger.

Nope, they were siblings from Chicagoland. :-)

even Galbiati has its nuances

{Gal vs Gall}

~~~~~
Gall-bee-Ah-tee (Italian)
and the Americanized
Gyal-bee-Ah-tee
Our oldest member uses the American version and the younger ones use the Italian *L*
Funny also, when people Americanize their last names, and go with the European-style first name.
LOL!! All of Devonne's married life to Phil her name was pronounced one way and now I hear Ian pronouncing it another way. I asked him since when was his last name pronounced that way? He looked at me, blinked, and said, "Always!" Um, no. :)I was at the airport and told the lady at the desk my last name and she said, "It's pronounced, SHINE-lob." Can you believe that!? She was telling ME how to pronounce MY NAME!
It depends. It bothered me that in the US, Morillo is pronounced as if the two middles "l's" were just that, "l's" when the correct Spanish pronunciation is more like Mo-ree-o. But the I realize that a lot of people don't know Spanish pronunciation rules and it doesn't bother me any more.
:)
Give me an example of what bothers you.
I pronounce it kwohr-TAN-uh. How does Ian pronounce it?
That's what happens when my father-in-law pronounces our oldest son's name :-D
It is a Minnesota Wisconsin thing here. Just like I say breakfast, lunch, supper and everyone here says breakfast, lunch, dinner.
I had a client call me Cath...I....
Are you calling me a doofus?
I don't know, b/c I pronounce my name wrong: I have an "ei" in my name, and it's pronounce like "ie". That's what I grew up with.
lol... no sir, folks who insist on mispronouncing their own last names.
:)
In my neck of the woods it was actually Dubois - the french form would be "doo-bwaz" (with a nearly silent "z" sound). One of the kids insisted it was actually "doo-boyz". Okay... he was a duofours...
yes
Mostly just the Americanization. It's confusing because you never know how it's supposed to be.
He says, Kwar-TAHN-uh. La dee frick'n dah I say. LOL!!!
We lived somewhere in Wisconsin --maybe Milwaukee--where it was pronounced "dooboyz". Maybe, even, on TV.
The grocery store pronounces it Kroger. I'm not sure which of the other two ways was real German. I think it's strange that the whole family didn't use the same pronounciation.
Pronunciation? I was going to correct it but it was taking forever to let me in.
Date: 2010-01-06 12:31 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Kath-eye?
Date: 2010-01-06 12:33 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com
Yeah, but they also spell it "Kroger". ;-)
In German, the "oe" has a strange pronunciation that most non-Germans can't get, but it sounds similar to the "a" sound. So "Kray-ger" would be closest.
Reminds me of that scene from Young Frankenstein:
Igor: Dr. Frankenstein...
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: "Fronkensteen."
Igor: You're putting me on.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: No, it's pronounced "Fronkensteen."
Igor: Do you also say "Froaderick"?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: No... ”Frederick."
Igor: Well, why isn't it "Froaderick Fronkensteen"?
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: It isn't; it's "Frederick Fronkensteen."
Igor: I see.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: You must be Igor.
[He pronounces it ee-gor]
Igor: No, it's pronounced "eye-gor."
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: But they told me it was "ee-gor."
Igor: Well, they were wrong then, weren't they?
