I ran down to the circus parade this afternoon. It was kinda fun. I wasn't sure where I'd park, or whether I'd get a good place to see it from. I had to walk quite a few blocks, but I found a couple of decent places to stand. I didn't get a great set of pictures, mainly because I'm not good at shooting moving targets, but you can at least see what was going on - except that I don't have the pictures done yet. So here's a teaser.

The parade was horse drawn wagons, punctuated by marching bands. Some of the wagons were carriages with local dignitaries, but most were circus wagons. Several bandwagons, a few with wild animals. I saw tigers, a lion, baboons, a giraffe, and snake charmers. I didn't see the elephants marching. They had a wild west, a patriotic, a Ringling Brothers, an international and a children's section. Lots of clowns (including Ernest Borgnine). Lots of horses, both pulling wagons and being ridden.

I had to get home for gaming, so I didn't stay til the end, but that's okay. I was there for over an hour, and I think I only saw about half of it.

John was down there. I'm not surprised the two of you didn't see each other though. So many people were there!

That's a nice picture. I recognize that wagon form years past, when the circus train came through Middleton.

The calliope wagon was loaned to Spring Green's 150th anniversary parade in 2007. Our neighbor got to drive the hitch and his wife got to play the calliope!

I wouldn't be surprised at all. This is a big show!

One of the better pics, actually.

I could have walked right by him! I was settled in for a little while, and if he'd been within 50 feet of me, I'd have seen him. Otherwise, I was moving around, and not looking at people much.

Nice icon. :-)

It's pretty impressive. There were quite a few wagons that had a brand new coat of gold leaf. They just glowed in the sunlight.

I saw the calliope play at the grounds on thursday. It brought up the rear of the parade, so I didn't see it yesterday. It's loud!

I was always tauught to pronounce calliope as kuh-LI'-o-pee, but the TV announcer said "Kallyope." I was disappointed, or maybe I've always been wrong.

I was going to mention that in the circus, it's cally-ope, and elsewhere it's cuh-lie-oh-pee. So no, you weren't wrong, exactly. But where else are they found?
