A budding Chinese lantern?

mda has taken the ripe Chinese lanterns, cut them off, and placed them over Christmas lights strung around the kitchen windows. It's a really nice effect. They last quite a long time, in part b/c Christmas lights really don't hurt the Chinese lanterns at all.

I cut a bunch of those to add to the Christmas lights and can tell you it's a bit of work, but really worth it.

Cute idea!

It's bee balm. (see below)

It's bee balm. The flower is just starting to bloom. The flowers bud at the top of a stem, but before they even open, the stem continues to grow through the middle of the flower. So the green part is a small cluster of leaves at the tip of the growing stem. The flower is just underneath it.

Ooh - bee balm. Always something I want when I see it, but I never think to plant it when I should.

I have it in a spot with foxglove and coral bells, all of which hummingbirds like.

We have some white bee balm which was given to us. I don't know if that attracts hummingbirds. We have a hummingbird feeder, and it's nice to see them.

This is a GREAT IDEA! I imagine it would be even safer with the new LED lights that don't put off heat.. I would love to see something like that strung around the edge of a table umbrella outside.. hee hee.. man this sparked my imagination!

*GRIN*!!!! My bee balm is all but tapped out now, because of the heat.. but it was really pretty earlier. The yellow behind it totally sets it off! Fireworks indeed!

It should. My foxglove are white. And the coral bells are so tiny, I don't understand why they bother. I don't put the feeder out when those flowers are in season.

Thanks! Now when are we going to see pics from your garden? :-)

Hmmm - maybe I don't see hummingbirds b/c the bee balm is in the front yard, and we spend a lot of time on our side deck. And those little buggers do move fast!

The effect is pretty, gives a nice, warm light, and of course attracts a lot of interest & attention. It really makes me want to make the string around our kitchen window again.
