Even though it was very cold, this isn't about the weather. I finally found an excuse to get out and take some pictures. Cyn was at a conference today, so I had the day free. The sun was out, and though the temp was in the single digits, I decided it would be cool to check out the park by the lake. The ice formations on the beach are impressive. Way out in the lake, I could see a lot of bright white ice. Not sure how solid it is, but there didn't seem to be open water. Right next to the shore were little pieces of slushy ice floating in the water. Out from there it was glassy smooth, with only wide swells. Out from there the surface was a mix of ice and ripples from the wind. The park was cold where there was a breeze, but reasonable out of the breeze, like on the beach.

This spike is an "ice volcano." It's formed where water sprays out of a hole in ice when the waves come in. I'm not sure if it's "dormant," or if the waves just weren't strong enough.
