Even though it was very cold, this isn't about the weather. I finally found an excuse to get out and take some pictures. Cyn was at a conference today, so I had the day free. The sun was out, and though the temp was in the single digits, I decided it would be cool to check out the park by the lake. The ice formations on the beach are impressive. Way out in the lake, I could see a lot of bright white ice. Not sure how solid it is, but there didn't seem to be open water. Right next to the shore were little pieces of slushy ice floating in the water. Out from there it was glassy smooth, with only wide swells. Out from there the surface was a mix of ice and ripples from the wind. The park was cold where there was a breeze, but reasonable out of the breeze, like on the beach.

This spike is an "ice volcano." It's formed where water sprays out of a hole in ice when the waves come in. I'm not sure if it's "dormant," or if the waves just weren't strong enough.

Very nice! You seem to have hit the *blue hour* taking those. I like how ice looks then.

That's super about seeing the Bald Eagle too.

These photos are so nice. I keep flipping by them and stopping. Something about an ice covered lake that is so calming to me. My folks live near Lake Chautauqua, in NY state and I used to enjoy visiting this time of year and taking walks near it (and sometimes on it). This time of year there are always snowmobile tracks all over the lake.

Thanks for sharing these!

Is it one of those rare years, then, when Lake Michigan freezes over totally?
The ice volcano fascinates me...I'd love to see one in the process of formation.

Well live and learn. I never heard of an ice volcano before.

I've heard of the golden hour, but not the blue hour. The sun had gone down behind the bluff, and everything was lit by the blue sky. You should've seen these pictures before I took all the blue out! :-D

Oh, and I don't know if that first pic looked odd to you, but I never noticed that I'd reversed the height and width attributes on the image code. It's fixed now.

It's not frozen over yet, but if we have more of these below-zero temps, it might.

It looks like the eastern half of the lake is frozen over.

Check them out again. I fixed the first one. Apparently, I never looked at it after I posted it. I had the height and width reversed.

And thanks!

They were calling it that in the paper the other day. *shrug*

It looks like Superior is mostly all frozen...of course it is colder up there.

There really is/are times when the snow and ice look blue. Our friend in Sweden pointed that out. I think your photos are beautiful.
