Mezcal is liquor distilled from the agave plant. Tequila is a mezcal which is generally made of the blue agave, and generally made in northern Mexico, in the vicinity of Tequila. Laws in both Mexico and the United States require the manufacturing of tequila be done in Mexico. Mexican law states that 100 percent Agave tequilas must be labeled "100% de Agave". It must contain at least 51% agave to be called tequila. The other portion is usually fermented corn.

AƱejo tequila is aged in oak barrels for at least three years. Reposado is aged between 2 months and 3 years in oak. Blanco or plata is unaged. Oro is blended reposado and blanco.

The "worms" are the larva of a moth that infests agave plants. The Norma Oficial Mexicana prohibits adding insects or larvae to tequila, so they're only found in mezcal.
