My sister gave me an "LP-to-Digital Recording System." It's really just a turntable, with some software included in the box. The turntable seems decent, though certainly not audiophile quality. The software is adequate. It wasn't too tough to figure out, but it took me a little bit to work through some of the details. And the software will work on any sound input - microphone, tape deck, whatever. It makes mp3's, so the extinction of the CD is not a worry. I'm putting all this music on my computer, and then burning some of it to disc.

So now I'm going through my LPs. I could go crazy with this. I have a lot of LPs which I hope to have on CD someday, so my main focus is going to be the LPs which I probably wouldn't spend money on replacing. Some one-hit wonders, and other bands which I like a little bit. Plus there's some stuff that isn't available on CD. This will be fun.

For example, we've got a big stack of Judas Priest. I don't really care to listen to an album straight through (very often), but I like enough of their stuff to make a best-of mix.

I recommend against this item for anyone who already has a decent turntable. Just get some software (which will probably be better) and the proper connecting cable, and hook it up directly to your computer. Otherwise, it's a nice out-of-the-box system for a decent price.

A while back, a friend here was recommending some software to me. Wave Knife, maybe? From what I hear, there are various decent programs, both free and at cost. The one that came with this turntable seems okay, but I can't help thinking that many others would be better. If he's good with computers, he should have his pick of programs. Other than that, all he'll need is something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Y-cable-Black-3-5MM-2-RCAM/dp/B0002J1LES/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1198800562&sr=1-1)
to hook the turntable to the line-in jack.
