I got a cell phone. To people whom I gave the number, I said I probably woudln't have it on when I was home, and I wouldn't be taking it with me to work. Two different people complained something like "what's the point of having a portable phone if you don't take it anywhere?"

Um... how does not taking it to work with me equate to not taking it anywhere?

Dontcha know the point of having a cel phone is so that everybody can reach you, all of the time?

See, I just have a cel phone and I leave it turned off. (That's what voice mail is for, after all.) What my cel phone is for is getting my voice mail messages, whenever or wherever I feel like it. ;)

my question would be, why pay for a land line at all?

DO NOT TAKE IT TO WORK

Trust me on this. If you have a cell phone at work, your coworkers will call you on it from the same damn building.. to keep from having to walk to find you.

Bastards.

I no longer have a land line, but I wonder sometimes about the decision. After Katrina and now the San Diego fires, I see how important they can be.

I have a cell phone that I only turn on when Tom & I are not together. I get yelled at all the time for not having it on. I see no point to have 2 cell phones on at the same time.

In case I lose my phone?

They can still call me at my desk on my regular phone. But I wouldn't be giving my phone number to people at work anyway. I wouldn't want people to call me outside of work.

I don't like having to carry things around with me, so I'll be watching for every excuse I can use, to leave it at home, or off. Like if Cyn has hers, I don't need mine. ;-)

Sounds good to me. The other reason to have a phone is for just in case. Like, just in case I get lost and have to call someone for directions. In that case, I can simply turn it on.

I think it's great that you have a healthy attitude toward your cell phone - it works for you and you don't work for it. Even if I have the phone with me, it doesn't mean I'll be rude and answer it while in the middle of a meeting or conversation - unless I think it may be a real emergency. My colleagues know that a text message is best in those situations though, so I can glance down and know what's up.

Generally I keep it on and with me though - the cell phone is not just for *my* emergencies and I don't necessarily know when a *loved one* needs to reach me in an emergency.

Cyn knows to get the receptionist to find me if it's an emergency. If I had a very long commute, I'd probably carry it with me. One reason I don't take it to work with me is that it's one more thing to carry. And one more thing to forget. I don't want to leave it at work and then not have it when I really need it.
