new camera

I got a new camera for the trip. A digital SLR. Canon Rebel XTi. Now I can take pictures in RAW. And I need a RAW editor. I'll be able to make my pictures look better than I can with jpegs and Photoshop. Unfortunately, with ten megapixels, in RAW mode I can only get about 50 pics on a 1 Gig card. Setting it for meduim size jpeg, I can get about 250. If I do that, it kind of diminishes the value of being able to take pics in RAW. And I'd still need several more cards for a weeklong trip. I guess I'll have to go buy a laptop, to offload the pics to. ;-)

I got a polarizer for the lens. I was surprised that the pictures come out dimmer. That's strange because the light meter is through-the-lens.

I learned that lenses on digital cameras have different effective focal lengths than they do on film cameras. My old camera had a 28-80mm. This one has an 18-55mm lens, but both lenses perform the same on their cameras. But I can take the 28-80 off of my film camera and put it on the digital, and it performs like a 45-130mm lens. So that's nice.

Reading your post about your camera was like listening to someone telling you something in another language you barely understand. I didn't absorb information but it was fun to catch the interest and excitement and know you'd come home with wonderful pictures.

my camera came with a progrm which has a raw editor. i'd be surprised if yours didn't. i recommend a photobank for storing your images on the road. you could get a larger card, but a 40 gig photobank is about the same cost as a six gig card, and only the size of an ipod.

The Photobank is exactly what I was hokping existed, but it sure got bad reviews at Amazon. Do you use one?

i used it in costa rica last trip. i wish i could name the folders as i download the images, and i wish i didn't have to delete the images manually from the card using my camera, but those are minor complaints.

Most mp3 players are photo-capable, and many have card slots. If they don't, I might stil be able to transfer pics through USB.

Okay, I ended getting an mp3 player with a nice big 4" LCD display. Of course it cost a lot more than the one you suggested. Damn, this trip is getting expensive!
