I was going for a job interview at some fancy place for some high powered job. I was told to be at a certain place at a certain time, so I showed up early. I wandered around in the bar area. It was all dark oak, shiny brass and velvet. It was a big room, so I sat down near one of the bars. They guy whom I was supposed to see came in and went into an office. The sign on the door said "Director of Safety" which I took to mean security. And it was for some large organization, not just the building. Anyway, I got the attention of the guy, who was Japanese, but not exactly Japanese looking, and he smiled and told me to wait just a bit, and someone else went into his office - another interviewee, I guessed.
I waited for quite a while. I wandered over to another set of bars, and hung out for a little while. A couple asked me to go over to the other bar and get refils for their candles. I was watching the bartender getting out the new candles, realizing I'd have to pay for them, and hoping that couple would repay me, when I saw the guy I was supposed to be meeting, wandering around the big room, looking for me. I went to get his attention. I felt like an idiot, waving my arms to get the attention of someone so powerful, especially for a job interview, but I didn't think it was a good idea to make him search any longer. I told him I'd be in in half a minute. I told the people I had to go to a meeting.
Just as I got over to the hallway where his office was, the lights went dim. I went down to the door that I thought he was in, and started to open the door, when I realized that it wasn't it. It was five doors down, but it didn't seem to say the same thing on the door, and it was a swinging door, not one with a latch. I pushed it open just a little bit. A voice came from inside that might have been saying to come in, but I decided I'd better be sure it was the right room, so I didn't go in. I wandered up and down, checking all the doors, including that same one, but there was no office. There were rest rooms, but most of the other doors led into banquet room, and crews were setting up or tearing down. I was getting pretty upset with myself for not going in the first door, when I had the chance. I didn't know what to do. I was considering crying. I found a staircase going up. On the landing were several somewhat-Japanese-looking security guards. One of them stopped me and then said I could go up and look around. He made it clear that the area was normally off limits, but they were letting people up there to look over the balcony onto the bar area. I told him that I had a problem, and maybe he could help me. I was looking for the office of someone, and I told him the guy's name. He smiled and said that he doesn't keep an office. I realized that he had been waiting for me in one of those lounges, and since I didn't show up, he left. I had failed the test.
