My mom broke her double-boiler a while back, so she was improvising. She put a big glass bowl into a stainless steel pan. The bowl was tall with steep sides, like the pain. When she was finished, she left the bowl in the pan, so when they cooled, they were stuck together. I tried to get them apart.

I put ice water in the bowl, and put the pan on the stove, on low. I kept the heat low because I didn't want to cause the bowl to break due to the heat, like when I wasn't ready for it. I eventually poured the ice water out as well. It took a while for the pan to heat up all the way to the rim, but eventually it did, but the bowl wouldn't budge. Mom said she wanted to save the pan, so I could break the bowl if necessary.

I eventually gave up and took it to the basement to break. I put it inside a paper grocery bag to contain the glass. There wasn't really room two swing the hammer inside the bag, so I just dropped the hammer on the glass. It didn't break. So I put the bag on its side, and tried to figure out a way to turn the pan so I could get a swing at it, and the bowl came out of the pan!

The best I can figure is that the blow from the hammer loosened it.
