sod weekend

On Wednesday, I rented a sod cutter, and cut up a bunch of sod. And I burned the brush on the spot where the sod was to go. Saturday morning I prepped the former brush pile (that means I scraped up as much of the ash as I could). Then I moved sod for several hours. I got about two-thirds of it moved.

In the evening, we went to a show. It was a talk given by Robert Fripp, guitarist for King Crimson, and his manager, David Singleton. It was interesting. Fripp always has interesting things to say.

Today, I had to finish moving the sod. I mean, I didn't have to finish today - there's no impending deadline, but it gets dark too early to do it after work, and I'm not sure when I'll have time on the weekends to do more. So I barely got it done before I had to leave for gaming. I would have had time to spare, but I lost an hour due to a flat tire on my wheelbarrow.

I went to the hardware store. The woman (my favorite person there, who knows everything) asked what size? I didn't know there was more than one size. I said "um, like that one?" It was a six-inch rim. They only had new inner tubes for the 8in. I had to go home to doublecheck the size before trying a different store. It turned out I did have the the 8in so I went back to buy the tube. In hindsight, I should have either (1) bought it anyway, in case it was the size I needed, or (2) looked for further examples of wheelbarrow wheels in the store. Either one would have saved me a trip. Note for future - keep the wheelbarrow tires pumped up. The valve stem broke at the base, and I think it wouldn't have if the tube had been fully inflated.

Since I had all that sod, I took the opportunity to put some down in places that needed new grass. Mostly, this was in the area of the burn pile, around what became the sod pile. Also, along the south side of the shed and the south side of the woodpile. So I put it down but didn't get a chance to water it, since I ran out of time. I plan on doing it tomorrow, since I'm working at home.

Moving the sod was hard work of course. I think I ate an extra meal yesterday. And drank tons of water. Between supper and the show last night, I fell asleep. Felt crappy after that, and didn't wake up until we had to drive downtown. I should be in bed right now, but I had too much beer and food at gaming tonight, and feel crappy.

There have been a lot of birds around. Yesterday, I saw red-breasted nuthatches. This year was the first time I'd seen them in the yard. They are not afraid of me at all. Yesterday, there was some small brownish bird where the sod was cut up. It would fly away when I came for sod, and return when I had left. Buzzards flew low over the yard a few times. Red-bellied woodpeckers were active, and I heard them call a few times. I saw what I think were yellow-rumped warblers. And a tiny black-and-white-ish bird.

And then there was gaming tonight. And after I got home, I had to make sure the tickets for the whisky tasting were added to the website. I haven't done it before, and they go on sale tomorrow, and this is a big event, and I can't screw it up!
