I started off the day with a sod cutter. I rented it, and had it delivered. It had a gas engine. I de-grassed about 1000 square feet of yard. It took me about two hours. I didn't remove the sod from the area, just got it detached from the ground. The plan is to plant wildflowers and native grasses there. I already have one section, and this is an expansion.
After noon, I burned my brush pile. Bark leftover from splitting, and branches from years of accumulation. Not all of it burned up, because some of it was halfway decayed to dirt, but more of it burned than expected. The brush pile was too close to my woodpile. I didn't want all that freshly split wood to start on fire, so I had to move the brush pile away from it. I couldn't move it very far, but got just enough space to give it a go. I had the hose handy, and sprayed the wood every so often. It would steam. The fire was very hot, of course. It was painful to go near. Fortunately, it didn't all burn up at once - it took a while for the fire to work its way across the pile. I left after supper, and checked it at 11:00 when I got home. There were still some glowing hot spots, but nothing was moving in a direction it shouldn't be.
When the fire was burned down far enough I could leave it, I mowed the lawn. Got done just before supper, and took a shower.
After supper I drove out to my dad's. I met with him and Larry, to discuss our upcoming tasting. Wasn't much to discuss, so we mostly drank whiskies and discussed them.
Now that the brush pile has burned down, I have a place to put all that sod. I'll pile it all up, and it will become dirt. I'm not sure how long it will take me to move the sod. I only have an hour or so in the evenings, before it gets dark, and I'll be busy on Saturday. I hope I can finish by Sunday. Not that there's any rush, but I don't want it to take weeks.
