baseball game
Jun. 4th, 2022 08:26 pmOne of my photographer acquaintances called, asking if I would shoot an event for her. She works for the ALS association, and they had a big thing at a baseball game. It was Lou Gehrig Day, so they had a "tailgate party." That is, food and drink and a band, and a couple of sections in the stadium. They had someone throwing out the first pitch, and someone waving a flag for some reason (there is a lot of entertainment and "engagement" going on during these games).
So my first reaction was to say no. It was kinda crazy, but I felt like, I'm going to get confused about the instructions, and not know where to go, and stuff like that. On the other hand, I thought it would be cool to see behind the scenes. But she needed someone, and I hate turning people down. So I decided to go outside my comfort zone and do the shoot.
I did, in fact, get confused over directions. The instructions were very concise, and I forgot one of the details. I would have preferred more info, which would have given me enough facts to be able to fill in some blanks. But I got there. Then I wasn't sure how to find the people. I almost texted for details, but... think! They talked about this in the e-mail. Guest relations. Where is that? Right there. So I got that figured out too. Whew!
So I met our handler, Hannah, and the people who were throwing out the first pitch. We went for a walk, and made our way down to the field (from the right field line) where we stood around for a bit. Julie was there with her dad, who has ALS. And also Abbie and her mom.

I was nearby where a woman sang the National Anthem. Of course I was going to get a good shot. I snapped a couple dozen. Cindy and I laughed about it because I wasn't standing with my hand on my heart, I was down on one knee, shooting. So I took a knee for the anthem! I did have my hat off, though.

I totally blew the shot of Julie throwing the first pitch! It all happened so fast! I got the shot I wanted, looking over her dad's shoulder at her walking onto the field, but just then she turned to throw the ball, and I wasn't ready. Fortunately I got a couple of shots of her before and after that anyway.
Then there was Abbie, to throw the second first pitch. I got a good shot of her throwing, but she blew her shot. The ball went wide and into the grass. She laughed her ass off.

Then we walked off the field in the other direction (left field line). They took us up to the upper deck near the group's section. The handler took me to a different place to wait. Our new handler, and a woman and her friend showed up. She got to wave a flag. At some point during the first inning, someone waves a Brewer's flag, and Bernie Brewer, the team mascot slides down his slide (otherwise, he only sides for a home run). So we were up on this balcony high over the left field wall. The handler gives the word, the woman waves the flag back and forth, and Bernie Brewer slides into our space (we were warned to stay out of the area where he would land). The flag was between me and the sun, so I tried to get a cool shot of a silhouette with the beams of light coming out from behind it, but they didn't really work, so I moved over and got a more conventional shot.

Then I was free. I wandered the stadium. I went all the way up to the top, and then down and around. Ended up sitting in the stands to watch about half of the game. The Brewers were playing the San Diego Padres, and losing, for most of it. We finally left after the 8th inning. The Brew Crew scored four runs in the bottom of the 9th to come from behind and win.
