The washing machine is frustrating.

It was spontaneously quitting. The display would show a flashing number. So you'd guess at what part of the cycle it was in, and restart it. Occasionally it would completely shut down. Cyn realized that it happened more often on heavy loads, and was therefore caused by vibration.

We called a repair service, which we'd used before. The guy struggled to get the thing open. Said it was likely the control board, put it back together, and then it didn't work at all. No power to the front panel. He said it would cost about $400 to replace the control board. That's near what a new machine costs, so we're not doing that. If I replace it myself, it will cost less than $250. But is that worth it? How long will it last? We don't know how old this one is. Six to eight years? And what if it's not the control board?

What if there's just a loose wire someplace? I tried to remove the circuit board behind the control panel, but I couldn't get the knob off. There is no online help regarding this knob.
