My mom's birthday was in late July, but we never did anything for her. I said we'd take her out to eat (she really like Fox & Hounds), but around that time she was diagnosed with the cancer, so then had the surgery. Then she took the kids to Disney World. I saw some great reviews of the play, Sound of Music. That's one of her favoritest movies, so we offered to take her. Then she was sick for a few weeks and the tickets sold out. By the time she got better, I again asked her where she wanted to go for her birthday. She suggested a Mexican place in Milwaukee, looking at Christmas displays and going to The Domes.

We went to Botanas in Walker's Point. That's a rather Hispanic area. The food was good, but I wouldn't go out of my way. When we pulled up by the restaurant, there were parking meters. As we got out of the car, my mom pointed out that a nearby parking lot seemed to belong to the restaurant, and said we should pull in there. I said, no, I'm not getting back in the car; that I could afford the meter. I put in fifty cents for an hour, and couldn't find the other change I thought I had. I was ten minutes short, and said "good enough." You know what happened, or I wouldn't be telling the story. A $22 ticket.

So we drove downtown and saw the lights in Cathedral Square. Miller-Coors always has a big light display in the Miller Valley. They usually turn it off when Christmas is over, but this year they said they'd leave it on longer. It was not on.

We drove over to The Domes. That's the Mitchell Park Conservancy horticultural domes. On Thursdays they have live music and are open late. The place seemed pretty crowded - because of the holidays, I guess. They have various sorts of popular music. A stage set up, and often a dance floor and/or seats. Tonight they had "dueling pianos." I wasn't thrilled about going on this night because I wouldn't be into the piano music, and because I wanted to see the plants in the daylight (and because I wanted to go to a Scotch tasting), but this is what mom wanted to do. It turned out that the music was horrible. Bad singers and not great on the pianos, either. Just to give you an idea, when they started "Benny and the Jets," I immediately thought of the falsetto part, and wanted make a quick exit. It turned out that that falsetto part was the best singing of the night. I would have preferred their duel been to the death. But not ours.

Mom didn't enjoy it a whole lot, so we left the music to wander the domes. While I was interested in the plants, and disappointed that it was too dim to see them well, it was cool to see the domes at night. They have a desert dome and a tropical dome. The show dome had a Christmas display and the musicians. I loved the cacti and other desert plants. I need to go back in the daytime.

It was nice to spend an evening with my mom.
