chick flicks onstage
Dec. 13th, 2012 12:09 amWe saw Sense and Sensibility onstage at The Rep. Not impressed. It's the stage version of a chick flick. As such, Cindy disliked it even more than I did. We saw Pride and Prejudice a couple of years ago, and neither of us recalled disliking that, so I'm not sure exactly why this one was worse. Just a less-interesting story, I guess. Maybe the Victorian-style overacting (which I would blame on the direction)? There was one actress that I liked, who didn't overact (Elinor). I was a little annoyed by the fact that many of the actors played multiple parts. Budget crunch, I assume.
Anyway, the story is full of the usual inexplicable romances and pining for the objects of said romances, punctuated by exposition scenes of complicated offstage dramas. The first quarter was awful, the second quarter built into something nearly reasonable, but after halftime, it just went slowly downhill til it ended.
As far as this year's shows, we weren't extremely impressed by their staging of Assassins. We liked Anne Frank. At the moment, they're doing worse than 50/50. We'll see what happens in January, I guess.
