Went to a Scotch tasting tonight. I'm glad Cindy went down with me, to be designated driver. Even if I had restrained myself, I don't think I would have been able to drive. I sampled thirteen different malts. I'm still a bit drunk.
There were nine on the list, officially. Laphroig 10yr cask strength, Laphroig 18yr, Laphroig Quarter Cask, Bunnahabhain 12yr, Bunnahabhain 12yr Duncan Taylor, Lagavulin 16yr, Caol Isla 12yr, Bowmore 12yr, Ardbeg 10yr. He gave us Bruichladdich Rock as a bonus beforehand. Afterwards, one of the attendees bought us a taste of Caol Isla 16yr Duncan Taylor. A Rosebank Gordon McPhail bottling appeared at some point, and another attendee passed around his flask of MacAllan 12yr. I only had a single sip of the MacAllan, and I didn't finish my tastes of several of the whiskys, but I seconds of two of them.
Last night, Cyn and I visited my dad and stepmom for the birthdays of three of us. I had four malts. We finished off his Ardbeg Lord of the Isles. He gave me Bowmore 12y for my birthday, and I also had Balvenie Rum Cask and Bruichladdich Peat (the last of which were my favorites of the night.
So tonight, there were nine on the list, two of which my dad had never had before, but the host had made a substitution. One that my dad hadn't had, was replaced by the Bowmore which he'd given me the night before. It was widely agreed, even by the host and my dad, that the Bowmore was crap. Many laughs were had, as my dad admitted that he'd bought me a bottle the night before.
The theme for the night were the Islays. At the last tasting I went to, there were many groans and grumbling when we got to the peaty malts - Talisker and Lagavulin. Tonight, everyone who was there enjoyed that sort of malt, and a great clinking of glasses was heard when we reached Lagavulin. Both the Lagavulin 16 and the Ardbeg 10 were very good.
You know how most of your liquors with the higher alcohol content around around 40%? The three Laphroigs were 55.7%, 48% and 48%. There were only two more as low as 40%. I'm still a bit drunk. Did I mention that already?
