embedded videos
May. 2nd, 2008 06:39 pmWhen LJ first announced that they were supporting embedded YouTube videos, there was an outcry from people who didn't want to get stuck in MySpace hell. LJ said things should be fine because they weren't allowing an option for the videos to start playing automatically.
But then they expanded their code to allow embedded videos from just about any site. So they had to allow autoplaying.
I find this annoying. I've got pretty sucky bandwidth for cable, and I hate to see it sucked up by videos that I don't want to watch. Not to mention noises coming from my computer, that I didn't intend to hear. When I scroll over a video window, I've got to stop and click the pause button. If I wasn't listening to music on my computer, I could at least turn the sound off. Since I am listening to music, these intrusions are that much more annoying. One solution would be for anyone who posts a video that autoplays, to put it behind a cut. But we all know that things behind cuts don't get seen.
The only workable solution is to use image placeholders for videos. But unless you explain what your video is, that might as well be a cut. Instead of a "read more" link, there will be a clickable blank window. So keep in mind that if this becomes an issue, you may want to provide a teaser for your video.
