question for the helpdesk

What do I do to my PC, so if I hit a certain key or set of keys, my computer does something. Like hit ctrl + ! and it enters a certain bit of text?

For some reason, I had "The Stroke" in my head earlier today. Tonight, I was rummaging through a box of CDs and found it there, so it had to go in.
