It's already 90°. We're going hiking today.

Edit: official temp is 88.5. Strangely, everywhere inland is cooler. A city near where we're going, is 79 right now.

Edit: The forecast was for 91. The high was 98.

earthworms

Lumbricid earthworms are invasive to North America and not only have displaced native earthworms in much of the continent, but have invaded areas where earthworms did not formerly exist. There are no native earthworms in much of North America, especially in the north, and the forests there developed relying on a large amount of undecayed leaf matter. The worms decompose that leaf layer, making the habitat unsurvivable for certain species of trees, ferns and wildflowers.

We drove out to Lapham Peak State Park with our friends Doug and Susan. The park is in the South Kettle Moraine, which I'm not very familiar with, but it's in Doug's territory, so he showed it to us.

First we had a picnic. We had wine, strawberries, raspberries, chocolate and vanilla dips, grapes, cookies, chocolates, crackers, cheese spread and sandwiches. Doug and Susan supplied most of the goodies.

There's a hill with a lookout tower on it. It's one of the highest points in southeastern Wisconsin and has a great view. We picked a good day for the visit because it was suprisingly clear. Though Lake Michigan was out of view, we could see the buildings of downtown Milwaukee 25 miles away. I think we could see Madison too, but I'm not sure.

There are quite a few hiking trails there. We walked for about an hour. We found the gate to a well-manicured butterfly garden, so we trespassed in. The area is heavily glaciated, and hilly.

It was fairly hot out. It got up to about 98 degrees here at home, but inland, at the park, it barely broke 90. I didn't have much trouble with that, but Cyn got pretty hot. A couple of times, her face was all red, like she was ready to collapse. We tried to stay in the woods where there was shade.

I proposed the outing as an excuse to write an article about the park for Wikipedia. We got pictures too.

It was a really nice day.
