music geek toy
Dec. 26th, 2004 11:23 pmI got the Deja VROOM DVD from Cyn. It's a King Crimson concert. Tonight Cyn and I watched the first half of the concert. After she went to bed I took advantage of one of the geek features.
The band included rhythym sections from two different incarnations of the band. In the eighties, Bill Bruford and Tony Levin played drums and bass for the band, and in the nineties it was Pat Mastelotto and Trey Gunn. For this show, all four were playing along with guitarists Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew. I've always been curious about a band with two bassists and two drummers works, and this DVD lets me take a closer look. For one song, they had a camera on each musician, and you get to choose which one you want to watch.
I'm a big fan of Tony Levin, so I started with him. Then I thought, well if Tony's playing that, what is Trey playing? So then I watched him. Then I watched Fripp. Then Ade. It was very interesting watching and listening to the two drummers. During that song, Bruford was more keeping the beat, while Pat was playing the flasier bits. (I'd like to see Bruford playing the whole thing by himself.)
