On the streets of Cairo, suspicions of American and Israeli motives already run high. "Of course we don’t agree with killing innocent people," says dentist Nadia Ramadan. "But the policy of the U.S. government causes the United States to feel the world’s hate. They implanted Israel here 50 years ago. And they are giving Israel weapons to kill innocent Palestinians." Few are convinced there is direct evidence against Osama bin Laden; fewer still understand why innocent Afghanis should pay for his alleged crimes. "Is this the way?" asks Ramadan. No matter how much the Arabs and their leaders may sympathize with President Bush and the American people, when they hear him tell Congress that every nation must decide either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists, they don’t applaud. They check the exits.
