I took Cindy to a funeral today.

Tom died of a heart attack. He was 45. No warning.

He was married to Sue. Sue was my dad’s second wife. I've remained fairly close with her and her daughter Cheryl. I'm not very close with her son. We were good friends growing up, but we grew apart, so it’s always a little awkward meeting him.

I saw Sue’s whole family again for the first time in I don't know how many years. That was kind of odd. I had seen a few of them at Cheryl’s wedding three years ago. They weren't particularly friendly. They were all very glad to see my sister and me there today, though. "Oh, it is so glad of you to come. It means so much to her." I got the impression that they didn't know that we've remained close since the divorce.

Sue seemed to be taking it well. When we first met her today, she told us that she came home and found him on the floor. She had a smile and a little nervous laugh. A "what can you do?" kind of smile. She’s dealing with this the only way she knows how - keeping a positive attitude. She’s an extremely upbeat person. But it is almost like she is confused about how to act. Like this happiness thing is failing her. She’s going back and forth between upbeat and sad, from moment to moment.

Cheryl told me Sue sits on the stairs and looks at the spot she found Tom.

Tom and I never really connected. I had always hoped we would. We seemed to get more comfortable with each other as time went by, but we weren't quite there. But then I'm just speaking for me. I have no idea if he felt the same way at all. I think he liked me. I thought well of him, it was just that on a personal level, we didn't... connect.

I don't know. It’s disappointing.
