LJ troubles
Jul. 30th, 2001 04:41 pmI'm a little annoyed at the current LJ server problems.
On July 19th, Brad said:
"Sorry about the error messages lately ... too many users! :-)
"We have two new database servers and two new webservers on their way, as well as a new Cisco switch to replace our current shoddy backend network. (the switch was delivered today but since they bumped me on my flight back from the Webby Awards I wasn't here when the FedEx person delivered it). In total, this is about $14,000 worth of new hardware.
"It had been awhile since we bought new servers .... it was our mistake for not getting them earlier before we ran into problems again.
"I can give a dozen excuses why we didn't get new ones earlier but they're all pretty pathetic ... the most pathetic being that I always use the fast paid-user server so I never noticed things getting slow. :-)
"Anyway, our apologies for not being perfect. One day, perhaps. At least it's getting easier... It's nice to be able to buy new servers and just discover you already have the money for them."

"I hit lj_maint's userinfo and noticed the massive increase in viewers ... and well, I can't say how sorry we are for all of this crap. Believe me, all of our friends use this thing, too.
"We're still waiting for the servers. :(
"In the meantime, we are trying to keep the service up. I'm running out of ideas for noncritical things to shut off until we get the new servers, though :("
I'm not totally down on the guys, but why weren't they on top of this server thing, since the Webby awards were expected to throw a lot of people their way?
I've heard that the servers that were ordered over two weeks ago are not being shipped.
And why do they say so little about what's going on? Shouldn't they be giving us updates in the news or maintenance communitites? There are so many people irked by this, that you'd think they'd be giving them frequent updates?
And speaking of infrequent news, why was there no official mention of winning those Webby awards? By anyone? Brad was at the ceremony. Didn't he find this significant? Insomnia was the one who kept imploring us to vote (or whoring, as some have said). Why didn't he mention it? Why didn't he thank us?
I don't usually get upset about this sort of thing.
Anyway, I tried posting this, but it didn't take. Then I read Dave suggestion to take a vacation from LJ. He's right that I would like my life back, and should curtail my time here, but... this is LiveJournal!
