L.A.

If you were going to L.A. for a day or so, what would you do while there?

If I were going to L.A. for a day or so, what would you suggest that I do while there?

I would have to make it a hat trick and walk in the Pacific Ocean.

Whatever your wife tells you to...?

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
She said she wanted to dip her feet in the ocean there. That was the first suggestion that maybe there was something to do in LA besides driving out of it.

We're planning on landing there and driving into the hills and over to Arizona.

I'd go check out the big graveyards where all the old hollywood stars are buried. I'd also take some tours to see the former homes of the '40, '50 and '60's stars. The history about old hollywood is interesting to me.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not big on the homes, but the cemeteries are definitely on our list. In fact, we're going to be meeting a person who wrote a book about the graves of the stars.

LA...

1. If you have any interest in baseball, and I'm not sure you do, and the Dodgers are in town, you should see a game there. It's truly a magnificent experience.

2. If you've never attended a television program, you should do that. Leno, Craig Ferguson and a couple of others tape talk shows, and sometimes give freebies to the audience.

3. Studio tour. LA is an industry town. If you can do the Warner bros. lot tour, that's the one to do. If not, Universal is ok.

4. Drive PCH. The Pacific Coast Highway is a strip of asphalt that borders the ocean. There's nothing quite like driving this baby. Go up to Santa Barbara, make a u turn and come back.

5. Venice Beach. It's a sight to see. The boardwalk is fully populated on a beautiful LA day. It's a slice of life in LA LA Land. Grab a slice of pizza from a food stand, snap on some roller skates, or just walk around.

6. Catch a movie. Well, it is Hollywood! Go visit one of the massive movie palaces. You'll find them.

7. Cruise the Sunset Strip. As Huey Lewis sang, it's "something ev'ry one should see." It's somewhere between Times Square and Electric Avenue in Vegas.

8. Get gas. I'm sure the price will be in the $3 range. Go to ARCO. They tend to have the cheapest prices... at least last time I checked.

That'll keep you busy!

When will you be going, btw?

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
1. Not really intersted in sports.
2. Maybe.
3. I thought of that. Good tips.
4. Highway 1 out of Santa Monica? That sounds good. We could head up into the hills from there.
5, 6, 7, 8. At this point, we're only planning on spending a day or so there. We'll have to be a little picky. A visit to a cemetery is already on the list.

Thanks a lot!

[identity profile] vwip.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 08:23 am (UTC)(link)
If you go roller skating at Venice Beach, I want to see pictures!

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
that's a pretty good disincentive, I think.

If you were going to L.A. for a day or so, what would you do while there?

I'd go shopping for oxygen tanks and masks to make sure I could keep breathing during my visit.

If I were going to L.A. for a day or so, what would you suggest that I do while there?

Keep your wallet in your front pocket and don't go out alone after dark.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, no kidding. We were planning on landing at LAX and driving straight out of town, but then we decided we could stay a day or two and check it out. Not thrilled about dealing with a lot of that for the fun we will have.

[identity profile] roadskoller.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 10:33 am (UTC)(link)
One day? You have to at least wet your toes in the pacific ocean and watch the sunset.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I'll put that on the list.

[identity profile] ravengirl.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
you're going to l.a.?! cool!
there's so much! damn.
i have to think on this one.
i'll send you notes from work today.
(you never know- you might like an idea or two)~

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
:-)

[identity profile] rivendweller.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 12:40 pm (UTC)(link)
You might visit the Golden State? Woo hoo! (I'm way north, though)

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
We'll visit you next year.

[identity profile] sunshyncat.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I would drive around the mansions in Beverly Hills, stopping to shamelessly take pictures of the ones I like out the car window.

I suggest you be very careful. L.A. has some BAD BAD areas.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
We noticed that in a movie we were watching last night.

[identity profile] heartwork.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
go meet ellen degeneres

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
If we do, we'll get you her autograph.

[identity profile] marswalker.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well....

The beaches - Newport is just a tad south of LAX, and a famous beach for body surfing, etc.

The Queen Mary is in Long Beach (not a good beach, as beaches go), not far from LAX.

There's Disneyland and the new Disney California theme park.

One thing you might want to do - actually a few - get good maps of this area, and make sure your routes are pre-planned. Get the optional GPS mappy thingy in the rental car.

The desert is a nice place to visit sometimes! :-) There's a "park" in Palmdale with an SR-71 and a few other supersonic airplanes...

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, we'll need a good beach.

I think we'll be skipping the theme parks. Oh, wait - does Six Flags have any good roller coasters? Oh, nevermind.

Thanks, talk to you later. :-)

[identity profile] serendipity.livejournal.com 2005-08-23 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd probably have to take R to Disneyland. I'd prefer to visit a couple of my aunts.

You should spend the day planning your obvious next trip to the San Francisco Bay Area! Otherwise, check out Venice Beach and the Sunset Strip (where many rockers performed in the 60's).

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have a feeling we'll be out your way next fall.

We just might end up on Venice beach or the Strip.

If I were you, I'd probably kill everybody else. But I'm not you!

I figured as long as we're there we might as well make the most of it. I hope I can deal with the crap.

Take the short drive down Aviation Blvd. from LAX and eat at the Proud Bird. But only if you like the history of aviation and good food in an amazing atmosphere.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-08-24 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure when we'll get into town, or when we'll be wanting to eat, but I'll keep it in mind. (I have a passing interest in aviation.)
