back from the hospital

I sat with Cyn all afternoon, and evening. My mom and sister came down for a while around 8:00. It was kindof a dull day. She just had to lie there all day. No tests. Just a few meds. It was shift change just after I got there, so at least we got to talk to the nurse while I was there. He said she could go home if she wanted, but he gave us that attitude where doctors know best - even though they weren't really going to be doing anything for her. He pretty much had me convinced it was important for her to stay, but after a minute, I found some holes in his story. The stress test was already scheduled for 7 AM, and you have to be there a couple of hours ahead of time, so she decided she might as well stay. It didn't occur to me to ask why she had to stay in ICU. Two of her neighbors got moved to regular rooms. After insurance, we're going to be paying for about 20% of this.

Well, I hope this resolves soon, and that they don't obfuscate things as doctors often do. Give them hell if need be.

I expect it to be resolved by noon tomorrow. The stress test will be over, and they'll release her with heart problems ruled out, but no diagnosis. :-\

I know I'm not the one paying the bill, but--it seems to me to be better to follow the cautious plan. I think she's right to follow their plan--and not have to feel guilty.

[identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That guilt can't be helping her either if she is having "panic attacks". I hope that everyone does what the doctors say to do, even if it seems that they are not making any progress. Ruling things out IS progress, yes?

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 01:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly is, and she's agreed to all of their tests. Our concern is that she's been in the Intensive Care Unit, and hasn't had anything done to her since before noon yesterday. That seems like a waste.

[identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they are short of beds in the hospital? It does seem a waste. You are certainly right about that.

While I was there, they took two of Cyn's neighbors out to regular rooms.

Oh gosh! Well... hang in there Kevin. It's pretty scary stuff.

Maybe they are keeping her there so someone will have an eye on her, since they think it might be heart but don't know yet?

[identity profile] cynnerth.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what it was. They wanted someone there for me at all times. There were things being done that he didn't know about.

Hi, I'm home and this is my first comment. :)

Welcome home. Glad the stress test looked okay, sorry you ended up in the hospital. Eep. *hugs*

Best wishes to you and Cyn. Hope she gets to come home soon.

If you're concerned that they're keeping her without justifiable reason, I suggest that you talk to the Patient Advocate. Without knowing more about the situation it's hard to say whether they're being overly cautious or treating her appropriately. Either way, though, the most important thing is her health.

that sucks! i have another person on my list right now whose mother is in the hospital. of course, she'd had surgery so her situation is much more dire but when she stood up, all hell broke loose and now she's in an induced coma. but anyway, my point is, maybe it is better she stay there just until they figure things out. however, ICU does sound like overkill!
i'm glad she feels better. i can't imagine being cooped up in there all day. i hope things go well w/the stress test and most of all, i hope they figure out what was wrong. i also hope she finally got something to eat!!?!?

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
They finally decided she could eat, some time after noon. 45 minutes later, the orderly asked why she still didn't have lunch. He said he'd do something about it. He came back saying they still hadn't made her lunch, but he discovered they'd made her a breakfast tray that had been sitting around all morning, so he brought it to her. Mmmm, cold coffee and warm yogurt! And I think it was an hour after that before she got her lunch.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend's mother. That surprise stuff is the worst.

My thoughts are with you both. Huge hugs for you to pass on to Cyn.

[identity profile] ravengirl.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
grrr and gah. i know it's tough to call these things, but i agree with what you say above-- that by noon tomorrow, that's it. the test is done and, while they may schedule another test or two, those should be done by her regular doctor and she should go home to rest. she can't be getting much rest there! hospitals are the worst for that...unless you're in a coma, which could be quite nice *snort*

Hope everything works out okay.

While staying at the hospital probably wound up being the best idea THIS time, I have to say that doctors are NOT gods and they do not always know best.(if they did, perhaps there wouldn't have been a need for her to BE in the hospital!) Cyn would have been much more comfortable at home, surrounded by her things, and of course with you there. My brother, who used to spend a good share of his time in the hospital, used to sign himself out when he got impatient, and go home. Hospitals are terrible places to be sick, and worse places to have to wait until 'they' decide what 'they' are going to do.

Hope you got some rest. Please let us know, when you get a chance, how things are going.

[identity profile] mummm.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I know you are worried about the bills but I'm worried about Cyn. Have they checked the arteries in her neck? When my mother kept being faint and actually passed out a couple of times they discovered that it was blockages in her neck.

It also might be better for Cyn's stress levels if you could have a bit of trust in the doctors? I know that the family doctor rather let her down but still... they know lots more than any of us.

[identity profile] sunshine-two.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, at least they're taking the issue seriously now.

[identity profile] ranunculus.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Hugs to both of you. I hope that by the time you get this you will both be home, and that some diagnosis will have been reached.

I really, really don't trust doctors. None of them even got close to diagnosing what was wrong with me. So keep pushing and keep asking lots of questions.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2007-08-04 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say that things have gone badly, but I certainly can't say I'm happy with how things have gone.

Thanks. And thanks for your suggestions earlier.
