why are electronics so difficult?

I spent a lot of money on speakers for my year-old stereo. I needed to replace the cheap ones I had, plus take advantage of my surround reciever. Since I was upgrading the speakers, I figured I'd better get some decent cables to transmit the sound from the CD player and DVD player. Once I got everything replaced, I couildn't get any video from the DVD player. It comes through fine from the VCR, but not the DVD. I tried everything I could think of, and even discovered a few new tricks with the reciever, but nothing helped. Then I put the old cables back they way they were, but I still get no video from the DVD player. What's up with that? It makes me wonder if something's wrong with the DVD player.

My DVD player decided to quit working last night, too.

Not happy.

Your speakers and speaker cables prevented the DVD sound from working? Surely this is impossible, unless you have re-connected something wrongly.

I know. And I can't imagine how something could be connected wrong, much less different than it was.

I had the yellow cable plugged into the light orange jack, instead of hte yellow one.

Especially *my* stereo. You should hear Nine Inch Nails with my new subwoofer!

Well... not long ago I gave Cyn a pointer to some "finesse" tools for her cell phone. Tools like that can be used to "finesse" the video... (big big hammers!)

Actually - does the reciever route video from the VCR and DVD to the TV? Or do they plug right into the TV?

Check the DVD - if it has progressive outs (etc), it might be that it's putting out a progressive output (etc) that the TV can't read.

Video goes through the reciever. I'd wonder if it was the output, but I put everything back the way it was before I started. I'm going to swap DVD players (and hope the other one works). If it works, it will tell me that something happened to the DVD player when I was messing with it. At one point, I thought I had it when I discovered the way to switch the input on teh reciever from analog to digital to optical. Didn't help, though.
