grandma

My grandma died at 4:00 this morning.

She went into the hospital over a week ago, and then into a nursing home. I guess she had had strokes. This last time in the hospital, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She had been unhappy for a while now. She was having so much trouble getting around, and was scared that she was losing her sight. I think she's been ready to go.

The funeral will be on Thursday.

Of my cousins, one just had a baby so she won't be able to travel to the funeral. It's the birthday of another today, and he's got to work a fourteen hour shift. It sucks having to work at menial tasks with something like that on your mind. My aunt didn't tell the third cousin because his wife is out of town and she didn't want him to break down with no support.

My dad started calling relatives at 6:30 this morning. Most of them were out already.

Condolences

May she rest in peace.

When my father's grandmother (who was the one who raised him since his mother died when he was a baby) passed away, his family back in Iran decided not to tell him about it, because they were afraid that he would jump on a plane and fly there. This was the late '70s, mind you, so the political climate in Iran wasn't very hospitable to expatriates. He didn't find out for about two years, when a family friend called him to shoot the breeze and mentioned "Oh, by the way, sorry to hear about your grandmother."

My dad hasn't forgiven his family for keeping him in the dark.

That's serioulsy wrong. I mean, I guess I can understand why they didn't tell him (though I'm not sure if I'd have done the same), but they should have at least told him just after the funeral. Why on earth would they never have told him?
