Humans - despite their artistic pretensions, their sophistication, and their many accomplishments - owe their existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.
I'm not quite sure how he meant it, but I took it as a conservation message. Human civilization is so very dependent on a few crucial things-- like topsoil and rain. And it's so ironic and stupid that we're not taking better care of those things. It's like we're building a castle directly over the quarry we're pulling stone from.

I appreciate the quote because of its message of conservation and about priorities, but I didn't expect the conversation to revolve only around those issues.
