qotd

Humans - despite their artistic pretensions, their sophistication, and their many accomplishments - owe their existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.

don't forget the sun and, of course, sex

Hey, if you have rain and dirt, the mud you get just DEMANDS sex. The sun....well, that ugly thing I could do without. Icky nasty thing...

Yay, topsoil!
I've already said elsewhere that I think sophistication is overrated.

I'll add here that I think topsoil and rain are underrated and it's this species problem with our priorities that annoys me.

there would be no topsoil and it would not rain, if there were no sun.....

[identity profile] melonaise.livejournal.com 2003-05-30 08:36 am (UTC)(link)
Aye-- but "conservation of sunlight" isn't really an issue. Taking steps to preserve topsoil and potable water, on the other hand, is something we can do.

So when that's gone, we will be too....

i wasn't aware that kevin's post was in regard to convervation of topsoil and water, i assumed it just to be a statement to stimulate conversation.......but now, i notice that "qotd" means "quote of the day"....so, exactly what context was this quote taken from?.....who said it?....did it have to do with conservation?....or just the arrogance of the human species?.....

[identity profile] melonaise.livejournal.com 2003-05-30 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not quite sure how he meant it, but I took it as a conservation message. Human civilization is so very dependent on a few crucial things-- like topsoil and rain. And it's so ironic and stupid that we're not taking better care of those things. It's like we're building a castle directly over the quarry we're pulling stone from.

people who care, can make a difference every time they make a purchase......

Sorry, I should have attributed it to "Source Unknown."

I appreciate the quote because of its message of conservation and about priorities, but didn't expect the conversation to revolve around those issues.

And I knew somebody would bring up the sun.

Today is the first day in almost a month (literally!) when it hasn't rained.

Do you like Renaissance? If you've never heard of them, they were a progressive rock band in the 70's. I just found a tape of their Live in Carnegie Hall album, so I can tape it for you. It's really great stuff, similar in some ways to King Crimson and early Genesis. I hadn't listened to this tape in over a decade; I completely forgot I had it.

That'd be cool. I've got a couple of songs of theirs on a progressive compliation disc. It's also got ELP, Gentle Giant, and one other. I could send you that one too, if you want.

[identity profile] whorlpool.livejournal.com 2003-05-31 08:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure I already have some ELP and Gentle Giant on some old mix tapes, so I guess I'll pass on that one. However, if it's not too late and you have a chance, I'd love to have Radiohead's Kid A. I have a mix tape of Radiohead, but when I looked at the track listing for Kid A, I realized most of those songs aren't on my tape. Thanks!

I was just listening to that one, the other day, it's on top of the stack.

They have a new CD coming out next month, too. I've heard one song, and it sounds pretty good.

That's right. I'll have to get that one. I've never heard a Radiohead song I didn't like.
