We use a free utility called Boot and Nuke to wipe discs at work - you can gety it here:

It overwrites the disc with random data - you choose how many times you want this to happen. If you go for the full DOD strength wipe it will probably take about a day to complete but not even the CIA could find anything on it at the end of the process.
