On wednesday, the newspaper's five-day forecast said every day was to be in the upper or mid eighties, and chance of thunderstorms. Every day was in the upper or mid eighties and sunny. At least they're consistent. Today's five day forecast said every day is to be in the upper or mid eighties, and chance of thunderstorms. Any bets on whether we'll get any rain?

In fairness, I have to say that there were a few storms in the area last week, but none of them came through our neighborhood.

It has rained for two days now.. and the water from the flood wasn't dried up yet. *sigh*

One of my tomato varieties (yellow pear) has blossom end rot. All four of the. grrr.. on the plus side, I identified one of the unmarked tomatoes as a red zebra in the pots on the shady side of the patio. They seem to be doing better than the tomatoes in the ground in the heat and sun.. and water logged ground. PERHAPS *crosses fingers* I will get one of those tomatoes after all.

It almost worked. The sky grew dark, there was thunder, and the radar showed green and orange heading right for us, but it hasn't rained yet.

I just put our tomatoes in the ground last night. It remains to be seen how they'll do.

It is already too hot for them here. I am really frustrated with it. I am contemplating starting some more, and trying my hand at growing fall tomatoes.. even though no one here does it.

Why *couldn't* you just grow them in the fall or winter? I was just talking with user=ranunculus, who lives in the San Francisco area. She says broccoli and cauliflower are winter crops.

I saw that conversation and almost commented on it. They are dead of winter crops here as well. Spinach, onions and most lettuces are as well.

I am not sure why no one grows fall tomatoes here, and it may have something to do with the bugs or diseases. They are certainly running through my tomatoes right now. I have three more hillbilly potato leaf that I havn't stuck in the ground yet that are hardening off.. but I think I will try to grow all the varieties this fall, start them at the end of this month, that will give them a three month seedling time, then put them out in September. I don't know if it is too chilly at night then, it CAN drop down to fifty if we get a cool spell (we actually pray for those) at that time. I bet that sounds funny to you.

I can believe that about those crops being for the winter. It's a little warm here for them, in high summer.

Doesn't seem like fifty ought to hurt tomatoes, but what do I know?

I think it stops them from producing flowers, just like they won't produce flowers if it the night time temps don't fall BELOW 80. That is our problem with summer tomatoes here.
