naivete

When I was younger, I used to defend rock music as not being all about drugs or sex.

I feel pretty stupid about that now.

You weren't wrong. It's not all about sex and drugs. It's only 95% about sex and drugs. I mean, think about that lyric list. Big Yellow Taxi isn't about sex and drugs. Not much, anyway.

we all thought we knew everything back then.

Some in the 60's were about politics, hopes, and dreams. And romantic love, even.

Maybe it was just the songs I liked, then.

Funny, when I was a teenager, I had a rule that I would only say things I knew to be true. After many years, I learned that I did not follow this rule. That was a strange epiphany.

Oh, I don't know. The dramatic overtones in "Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-a-lot create a sense of parosody within the natural language construction of the advanced meter placement without direct regard to polysyllabic metaphor. The character creation and subsequent deconstruction through conceptual modeling of the dialogue evolution creates an effective thematic structure to encompass the allegorical allusion to intertexuality.

Right.

Hmm... lemme see... yep, them's the lyrics...
sex and drugs and rock and roll

That covers the bulk of Rock N' Roll. Hmm. Most of the rest can be covered with other lyrics:

Bring Lawyers, Guns and Money.
White punks on dope.

Yep... been there, done that. Don't feel bad. I used to argue that Freddie Mercury wasn't gay.

hey! Stop laughing!

*chuckles knowingly*

How 'bout this weather?

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-03-16 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
Freddie was always rather shy. But he did have some girlfriends for quite a few years. He wasn't "publicly" gay until well into Queen's career.

[identity profile] aki-dreaming.livejournal.com 2005-03-16 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That is entirely possible.

[identity profile] low-delta.livejournal.com 2005-03-17 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, there were quite a few specific songs that I didn't think were about sex or drugs, but were.

Heh.

Yeah, I have this problem all the time. Color me naive.
