security levels

Why do they announce the alert levels? Is this supposed to be the best way to let federal and local law enforcement and investigational personnel that they should be more vigilant? Or are we citizens supposed to step up our vigilance?

I can't think of any reason for it other than to make it seems like the government is on to of things. And it doesn't. Or if I'm feeling cynical, I feel like it's a reminder that we should be afraid.

My opinion: It a crock, and it's Chicken Little all over again. Fear is powerful. Make 'em scared. Make 'em shake in their boots. Then maybe they will turn to their benevolent protectors to save them. And not vote them out of office instead.

This administration is so cynical I can't believe it.

Yeah, it *is* a reminder that we should be afraid: very afraid that the Bush Regime isn't voted out of office!

What... my alert level reminder is still showing Bert (http://www.geekandproud.net/terror/). Did CNN say Ernie?

I'm working on original music and taking pictures of a local bakery today. I don't have time to be afraid. It could be anything... an asteroid, a dirty bomb, bovine spongiform encephalopathy...

Our government is a huge bladder of hot air and does not make so pleasing a sound as does the most poorly tuned and miserably played set of bagpipes. I am tired of listening. There's nothing I can do about any of this, anyway.

A fearful population is easier to manipulate if you do it right. Too much and you get mob mentality, not enough and they can still think clearly, just right and they've got you by the short and curlies.

We don't have that here, but occasionally you see in the papers that there's a risk of something happening, and I always wonder what I'm supposed to doa bout it.
